Natural Resource Management

WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS:
To address the issues connected to the degradation of soil water and biomass and develop watershed based development concept MIRROR implemented watershed development programs with the assistances of Western Ghat Cell and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development(NABARD) aiming to strengthen the eco system and people’s relationship with the nature and there by further the sustainable development process.
INTEGRATED WESTERN GHAT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
(Supported by WESTERN GHAT CELL)

With the support of Western Ghat Cell the organization implements three watershed development programs in Wayanad District, namely Kuppamudy watershed in Sulthan Bathery Grama Panchayath and Kumbalakallu Watershed in Noolpuzha and Cheengadikunnu watershed in Kaniyambetta Grama Panchayath since 2007. Under Natural Resources Management (NRM) activities the project supports the farmers to construct Earthen Bunds, Water Percolation Pits, and Rain Water Harvesting and Agro forestry. Under Production System Management (PSM) activities the project supports farmers to buy Cows and construct Biogas Plants an alternative fuel system. Under Livelihood Support System (LSS) the project supports through providing Calves and goats.

INTEGRATED WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
(National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development- NABARD)

NABARD selected MIRROR as its Program Facilitating Agency in 2009 and entrusted the agency to implement integrated Watershed Development programs in Chethalayam Watershed, Sulthan Bathery Panchayath and Pakkom Watershed in Pulpally Grama Panchayaht. The project is a people centered project and Village Watershed Committee has the whole responsibility to implement the programs.

As a beginning we implemented Capacity Building Phase (CBP) of these watershed development programs. After completion of CBP    the agency did a scientific and systematic Feasibility Study and prepared a Report for the Full Implementation Phase. In these watersheds the agency could achieve above 98 % of success in the CBP.

Natural Resources Management is the prime intention. After CBP the agency implemented  Full Implementation phase of the projects in two watersheds and achieved 99% of progress.

In Watershed Development Programs there are training components and we use this component to create awareness among the community to protect Natural Resources like water, soil, and biomass.

The agency organizes consultation programs, seminars and workshops on environmental issues, Global Warming and Climate Change, water literacy and so on. Initiates the community to do water budgeting, protection of water bodies, and drainage line treatments. The agency plans to mobilize youth and adolescents as Water Protection Forces in our intervention areas.

INTEGRATED WATERSHED BASED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM MASTER PLAN PREPARATION:
(Sulthan Bathery and Pulpally Grama Panchayaths)

Sulthan Bathery and Pulpally Grama Panchayaths entrusted the agency to put in order integrated watershed development master plan for the period of 2012-2017. As per the house hold base line data and PRA the agency submitted the same to the concerned GPs.

KFW SOIL PROJECT:
(National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development- NABARD)

Chethalayam watershed have started the initial working of  NABARD KFW soil project  2019.as part of the initial study we are conducted PRA and Group discussions, with elder people, farmers club Members, elder farmers, agriculture laboures, govt. and non govt. employees, Politicians, ward councilors, Self Help Groups members, youth, students, social workers, Anganvady teachers, Kudumbashree members, tribal people and others, it included 75 people.  Field visit was done under the supervision of Dr.V.R. Haridas. We have made preliminary report based on the discussions.

Though participatory water development approaches have been successful in watershed programmes in rain fed areas, soils in these areas remain neglected and mismanaged both as private and common property resources. Moreover, the impending threats due to climate change can possbly undo the efforts made under watershed programmes. Therefore, it has become imperative to assess the impacts of vulnerability to climate change in watersheds especially on soil health and productivity.

Recognizing this NABARD in collaboration with KfW has developed a project for ” Integration of Watershed Development for rehabilitation of degraded soil and climate change adaptation. This project incorporates issues of Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in watersheds threatened by degradation, by improving soil health through climate i sensitive investments and reducing vulnerability to climate change by stabilization,” enhancement and sustainable use of soil and water resources. Mirror- centre for social change is selected as one of the Project facilitating agency for implementing climate adaptive project under KFW Soil of NABARD. The watershed selected is Chethalayam Watershed at Sulthanbathery Municipality of Wayanad District.
